SMBC Taps Veteran Technologist to Co-Lead APAC Digital Push

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, SMBC, has recruited a 30-year banking technology veteran as its Co-Regional Chief Information Officer for Asia Pacific. The new position will require him to accelerate the bank’s digital transformation across 15 regional markets.

SMBC announced on Thursday that Luis Pereira took up the post on 13 May 2025 and will be based in Singapore, partnering with fellow Co-Regional CIO Fumitaka Kato and reporting to regional and group-level technology leaders.

The dual-leadership structure is designed to sharpen the bank’s competitive edge by strengthening digital resilience and innovation throughout its Asia-Pacific operations.

Earlier assignments included senior roles overseeing APAC technology, change delivery, and front-to-back process optimisation – expertise SMBC expects will translate into faster, more efficient customer solutions.
