SMBC Group Names Head APAC Debt Capital Markets Syndicate

SMBC Group has appointed Elaine He as Head of Debt Capital Markets Syndicate and Co-Head of Debt Capital Markets for Asia Pacific excluding Japan, the company announced Monday.

The appointment, effective May 11, comes as the Japanese banking group seeks to expand its capital markets presence across the Asia-Pacific region and strengthen coordination between its banking and securities businesses.

Based in Hong Kong as a Managing Director, Elaine He will oversee debt capital markets origination and syndication activities across primary issuance, including transaction strategy, execution and investor engagement. She will report to Joy Kwek, Co-Head of SMBC Capital Markets Asia and Head of Capital Markets & Solutions, Asia Pacific ex-Japan at SMBC Nikko Securities.

In the newly created role, He will work across Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and SMBC Nikko Securities to strengthen client coverage and distribution capabilities, with a focus on deepening relationships with issuers and institutional investors.

He joins SMBC Group with nearly 20 years of experience in debt capital markets and global fixed income markets across Asia-Pacific and the United States. Most recently, she served as Head of APAC Debt Syndicate at Morgan Stanley, where she advised issuers and investors on syndication, structured solutions and private credit transactions.

«I am delighted to join SMBC Group at such a pivotal time for Asia Pacific capital markets,» He said in a statement. «The Group’s platform spanning SMBC and SMBC Nikko offers a powerful combination of banking and securities capabilities, and I look forward to working with the team to build a market-leading debt capital markets franchise.»

Carsten Stoehr, Managing Executive Officer and Deputy Head of Asia Pacific at SMBC, said the appointment underscored the group’s commitment to expanding its regional debt platform.

«Elaine’s appointment reflects our continued commitment to strengthening our APAC debt platform,» Stoehr said. «Her deep market expertise, strong execution credentials and client-centric approach will play an important role in advancing our growth ambitions, enhancing global collaboration, and further reinforcing our value to clients and investors across Asia and beyond.»
