SMBC Appoints Corporate Banking Head for Philippines

Tokyo-based Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has named a 20-year veteran as its head of corporate banking for the Philippines.

SMBC has appointed Maria Angelica Balangue as head of corporate banking department in the Philippines, according to a statement, subject to regulatory approval by the local regulator, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). She succeeds Ruben Victa, who is retiring after five years of service with SMBC, during which he played a key role in strengthening the corporate banking franchise in the Philippines.

Based in Manila, Balangue will report to Hiroyasu Kanda, managing director and country head of Philippines, and Joyce Tee, head of corporate banking department Asia Pacific.

Balangue has over 20 years of financial experience with expertise in corporate banking, capital markets origination, and relationship management. She was most recently working at BDO Unibank as a corporate banking team head. Prior to that, she held various leadership roles at Union Bank of the Philippines, China Bank Capital Corp and ING Bank.

«Corporate Banking remains a strategic growth engine for SMBC in Asia Pacific. Under Angelica’s leadership, we will continue to leverage our global network and close collaboration with our partner bank in the Philippines, RCBC, to expand our large corporate business and elevate customer satisfaction locally and across the region,» commented Tee.
