The two sides will work to further accelerate the adoption of QR payment in Indonesia, according to a joint announcement.

Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), one of Indonesia’s leading commercial banks and the country’s largest lender by assets, has received approval from regulators to act as an acquirer to accept and process payment transactions made through Alipay in Indonesia.

BRI has been making dedicated efforts to expand the cashless transaction system in the community by introducing payment options using(Quick Response Indonesia Standard (QRIS), Handayani, BRI director of consumer, said.

The collaboration means that Alipay users visiting Indonesia will be able to make payments using their Alipay app at local merchants via QRIS, the announcement said. BRI is also partnering with QFPay Technology Indonesia as a system integrator to provide support and integrate BRI and Alipay systems.

Focus on Tourists

BRI will focus on areas most visited by Chinese tourists, including Bali, Batam and Manado, before expanding the acceptance of Alipay across its network of merchants using QRIS.

According to the announcement, the number of Chinese visitors to Indonesia has grown by 450 percent between 2009 to 2019, with tourist spending increasing year on year.
