PGIM Appoints Head of Japan Real Estate Business
PGIM has appointed Ryuji Katayama as head of its real estate business in Japan, effective October 2026. Based in Tokyo, he will oversee the business’s strategy, operations and investments in the country.
Ryuji Katayama most recently served as deputy head of Japan for real estate at PGIM, it says in a statement. He will retain his responsibilities as portfolio manager for the firm’s Asia Pacific value-add (AVP) and Japan-focused investment strategies. He will report to David Fassbender, PGIM’s head of Asia Pacific real estate.
Katayama joined PGIM in 2012 and has more than 20 years of experience in real estate investing. During his tenure, he has helped expand the firm’s real estate investment platform in Asia Pacific, including its AVP strategies. He previously served as head of transactions in Japan for PGIM’s Real Estate Investment Group.
Before joining PGIM, Katayama worked at ORIX in Tokyo, focusing on direct real estate equity investments and nonperforming loan transactions.
“Japan is one of our highest-conviction markets globally and a key pillar of our long-term growth strategy in Asia Pacific,” Fassbender said. He cited Katayama’s market knowledge, investment experience and industry relationships as assets for the business.
PGIM’s Real Estate Investment Group manages and administers $219 billion in gross real estate assets, making it the world’s second-largest real estate investment manager, according to the company. PGIM said it has more than 20 years of real estate investment experience in Japan, with transaction volume exceeding $12 billion across sectors and risk categories since 2023.
