HSBC Swiss Appoints New CEO from BBVA

Since last October, CFO Daniel Calado has been leading HSBC Swiss Private Bank on an interim basis. As of 27 April, Alfonso Gómez will take over as CEO. He worked for more than 31 years at the Spanish banking group Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA).

According to a statement released on Wednesday, Alfonso Gómez will be based in Geneva and report to Ida Liu, CEO of HSBC Private Bank. He brings more than 30 years of experience in Swiss and international wealth management, most recently serving as CEO of BBVA Switzerland, a position he held for over 12 years. The Spaniard worked for BBVA in New York, London, Madrid and Zurich, holding various senior roles. In total, Gómez spent exactly 31 years and six months at Spain’s second-largest bank, where he began his career as a risk analyst.

Since 2018, Gómez has also been a board member of the Association of Foreign Banks in Switzerland, where he has served as Vice Chairman since early 2023. He has also been a member of the board of the Swiss Finance Institute (SFI) for more than three years.

From Interim to Permanent

Alfonso succeeds Daniel Calado, who took on the role on an interim basis last October and will now return to his position as Chief Financial Officer of HSBC Private Bank Switzerland and EMEA, as well as a member of the executive committee.

Ida Liu, CEO of HSBC Private Bank, said: «With his extensive experience in Switzerland, proven leadership skills and commitment to delivering outstanding client satisfaction, he is ideally suited to lead our Swiss private bank.»
