HSBC Private Bank Launches Leadership Program With MIT Sloan

HSBC Private Bank has launched a global educational program in partnership with the MIT Sloan School of Management to prepare the next generation of ultra-high-net-worth families for leadership and wealth succession.

The Future Family Leaders Digital Program is designed for clients ages 23 to 30 who are beginning their leadership journeys. The six-week online course combines expertise from HSBC Private Bank’s family governance specialists and MIT Sloan’s family enterprise experts, with content developed and delivered jointly by the two institutions.

The curriculum covers family enterprise dynamics, the owner mindset, family unity, managing difficult conversations and developing a future pathway. Participants will complete six modules, including two live sessions and four asynchronous modules, allowing them to work through much of the material on their own schedules.

The first global cohort is scheduled to begin Nov. 3 and conclude Dec. 8.

Family Leaders Program

The new digital offering expands HSBC Private Bank’s broader Family Leaders program, which aims to help families navigate wealth transfers and prepare younger generations to take on leadership responsibilities. An estimated $83.5 trillion is expected to pass to the next generation over the next couple of decades, underscoring the scale of the succession challenge facing wealthy families.

“Wealth transfer can fall short when the next generation inherits the family’s wealth and business without the necessary skills to lead,” said Ida Liu, CEO of HSBC Private Bank. Clients want their children to gain experience managing the demands of leadership before a transition takes place, she added.

The program is intended to build the technical capabilities and confidence needed to navigate the family discussions that are essential to successful succession, Liu said.

John Davis, senior lecturer in family enterprise at the MIT Sloan School of Management, said the collaboration draws on decades of research and practical engagement with family-owned businesses, family offices and families’ social impact activities.

Partnership Brings  Expertise Into an Accessible Format

The partnership brings that expertise into an accessible format for emerging leaders, with the goal of helping them develop insights and practices that support long-term performance, Davis said.

The digital course builds on HSBC Private Bank’s existing leadership initiatives. In May, more than 60 clients attended the bank’s annual Future Family Leaders Forum in Athens. The bank also plans to introduce additional in-person events later this year, including regional forums tailored to local market needs and opportunities.

The launch comes as wealth management firms and family enterprises face growing pressure to prepare younger family members not only to inherit assets but also to manage businesses, maintain family cohesion and make decisions across generations.
