Manulife Turns to Insider for Next Phase of Distribution Growth
Manulife has appointed Carrie Tong as Chief Distribution Officer for Hong Kong and Macau, tasking the longtime executive with driving growth and advancing the insurer’s distribution transformation across the two markets.
Manulife has promoted Carrie Tong to Chief Distribution Officer for Hong Kong and Macau, placing a seasoned executive at the helm of one of its most important growth engines in the region.
Tong succeeds Ivan Chan, who is leaving the company to pursue opportunities outside the organisation.
In her new role, Tong will be responsible for driving business growth across all distribution channels, expanding strategic partnerships and shaping the insurer’s distribution strategy in Hong Kong and Macau. She will also oversee efforts to integrate traditional and digital channels more closely as customer expectations and distribution models continue to evolve.
Betting on Internal Talent
The appointment comes as insurers across Asia are investing heavily in technology, artificial intelligence and digital capabilities to improve customer engagement and strengthen distribution efficiency.
«We are delighted to welcome Carrie to this important role», said Wilton Kee, Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Hong Kong and Macau. «Her extensive strategy and operations experience, deep understanding of our business, and strong relationships across our distribution community position her well to lead our distribution organisation into its next phase of growth.»
Longtime Manulife Executive
Tong joined Manulife in 2015 and has held a series of leadership positions spanning strategy, transformation and distribution across both Hong Kong and Macau.
Most recently, she served as Chief Operations Officer, a role she assumed in 2023. During her tenure, she led initiatives aimed at enhancing customer experience, accelerating digital transformation and introducing AI-enabled operational capabilities.
The company credited her with improving operational effectiveness while helping build a more customer-centric organisation.
Focus on Distribution Transformation
The move underscores the growing importance of distribution as a competitive differentiator in Asia’s insurance industry.
Hong Kong remains one of the region’s most significant insurance and wealth management hubs, with insurers increasingly competing for affluent and cross-border clients through a combination of agency networks, bancassurance partnerships and digital channels.
By appointing an executive with experience across strategy, operations and distribution, Manulife is signalling its intention to continue investing in the evolution of its distribution platform while strengthening leadership continuity in the market.
Manulife serves more than 2.6 million customers across Hong Kong and Macau. The Toronto-based group operates in 25 markets globally and serves more than 37 million customers worldwide.
