NordVPN Shares Security Tips Following UBS Cyberattack

Earlier this week, UBS announced that some of its information was stolen as part of a cyberattack on its external supplier. NordVPN shares some tips on how to mitigate security risks, underlining the potential that the latest hack could be part of a broader campaign.

On Wednesday, UBS said its external supplier, Chain IQ, was a victim of a cyberattack leading to information about the Swiss bank being stolen. Though it noted that no client data was affected, data related to the bank's employees were reportedly leaked. Other companies that were clients of Chain IQ, such as Pictet, were also impacted.

According to cybersecurity software company NordVPN, the attack reflects the vulnerability of companies that are digitally active, especially when they rely on various external providers.

«Even though no customer data appears to have been affected, the incident is a clear example of how cybercriminals can obtain valuable information by attacking third parties – so-called supply chain attacks,» commented Paulius Vanagas, NordVPN's country manager for Switzerland and Austria. «What many people underestimate is that even attacks that do not appear to compromise customer data can be part of larger, coordinated campaigns.»

Reputational Risk

Even if client data is not leaked, such cyberattacks can have an impact on the reputation of not only a single firm but the broader industry.

«Banks stand for security and stability. When these companies are involved in a security incident through third parties, it also affects public confidence in an entire sector – even if no customer data is affected. The case clearly shows that Cybersecurity does not end at your own company's boundaries,» Vanagas said.

«In the financial sector, digital networks are highly complex and interconnected. A single weak point can jeopardize the entire infrastructure. It is therefore crucial to continuously monitor security processes and adapt them to the ever-changing threat landscape,» added NordVPN CTO Marijus Briedis.

Top 5 Tips

NordVPN shares five tips for those who are affected by similar situations:

1. Stay vigilant: Are you receiving messages relating to your data? Do not click on any links in emails and check the sender's address carefully.

2. Check email addresses for leaks: Use digital services to see if your data has been compromised.

3. Use a password manager: Even if no passwords have been stolen, now is a good time to change your passwords and use unique combinations.

4. Enable two-factor authentication: Wherever possible, an additional layer of security should be enabled.

5. Check account activity: Check accounts for suspicious activity or unauthorized logins. Also, pay attention to official information about the security breach and follow the company's recommended measures.
