Techcombank Expands Financial Ecosystem With Insurance Push

Vietnamese lender Techcombank is expanding its financial ecosystem with the launch of what it says is the country’s first comprehensive co-payment health insurance product. The move underscores the bank’s push to integrate banking, wealth management and insurance across its digital platform and nearly 18 million customers.

Techcom Insurance, the non-life insurer established by Techcombank, has launched Song An Health Insurance, a product designed to complement Vietnam’s national health insurance system by covering eligible medical expenses not included under the public scheme, according to a statement on Tuesday.

The company says it is the first comprehensive health insurance product in Vietnam based on a co-payment model linked to the country’s public health insurance system.

Rather than covering the entire treatment process at correspondingly higher premiums, Song An focuses on out-of-pocket expenses incurred by patients, including certain hospital accommodation costs, branded medicines and advanced medical procedures.

Building Beyond Banking

The launch is part of Techcombank’s broader strategy to build an integrated financial ecosystem spanning banking, wealth management and insurance.

«Techcombank is building a comprehensive financial ecosystem that can support customers at every stage of their lives,» Techcombank CEO Jens Lottner said.

By bringing together banking, wealth management, insurance and healthcare, the lender aims to deepen its relationship with customers beyond traditional banking services.

Techcombank, one of Vietnam’s largest private-sector banks, serves around 18 million retail and corporate customers, giving its insurance arm access to a significant potential customer base.

The bank said it will continue investing in technology, data capabilities and partnerships to expand the model.

Digital Insurance Model

Technology is a central component of the offering. Song An is integrated into Techcombank’s digital ecosystem, allowing underwriting, policy issuance and claims processing to be handled online.

Customers can also use direct billing at participating public hospitals or submit claims digitally. According to the company, eligible claims can be processed within two working days once the required documentation has been received.

Techcom Insurance has also signed strategic partnerships with several major public hospitals, including 19-8 Hospital, Hanoi Children’s Hospital, Hanoi Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital and Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital in Hai Phong.

Closing a Healthcare Funding Gap

The new product targets a potentially significant gap in Vietnam’s healthcare financing system.

While public health insurance covers around 96 percent of the population, according to Vietnam Social Security, patients can still face substantial out-of-pocket expenses for treatments and services not fully covered by the public system.

Techcom Insurance Chairman Pranav Seth said the insurer aims to develop products that address these gaps and position the company as a digitally driven health insurer.

According to the company, Techcom Insurance is the first insurer approved by Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance to implement such a co-payment insurance model alongside the public health insurance system.

The launch comes as Vietnam’s rapidly expanding financial sector increasingly embraces ecosystem-based business models, with banks seeking to combine financial services, insurance and digital platforms to capture a larger share of customers’ financial needs.Gerne.
