Hong Kong’s new health secretary confirmed that the city would continue to maintain the zero-Covid policy without pursuing any full border reopening.

Newly appointed health chief Lo Chung-mau called the pursuit of any full reopening of either mainland China or the international border unreasonable, according to an interview with local media «Oriental Daily». Lo underlined the threat of a higher number of deaths – currently 9,000 in Hong Kong – citing greater figures in the US and UK after reopening.

Nonetheless, Hong Kong authorities continue to relax measures including the suspension of a rule that bans airlines for carrying too many infected passengers. Prior to taking office, Lo also publicly spoke about the possibility of easing quarantine for travelers from seven days in a hotel to five days plus two days of home quarantine.
