China’s top office in Hong Kong unveiled its wish list for the city, underlining international competitiveness as one of the desired goals for the incoming chief executive.

The Hong Kong & Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) – China’s top office for overseeing the city – issued a statement that included a list of goals for incoming chief executive John Lee. The HKMAO has never issued any directives of the sort before outgoing chief Carrie Lam took the top office in 2017.

The list focuses on five goals including implementation of the ‘one country, two systems’ policy; addressing local concerns like housing; promotion of social development; integration of Hong Kong with China’s development;  as well as consolidation and improvement of Hong Kong’s international competitiveness.

«The central government places high hopes,» the HKMAO statement said on Lee and his incoming cabinet which has been approved by China’s State Council. «Hong Kong society and the general public are full of expectations.»
