Fugitive financier Low Taek Jho is reportedly hiding in Macau and Malay police claim that insufficient cooperation from the Chinese government has hindered the capture.

According to a Malaysian media firm «Utusan Malaysia» citing Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador, authorities had knowledge of Low’s whereabouts in Thailand in 2015 as well as his subsequent location.

«Jho Low entered Macau after being traced to his location in Thailand,» Abdul Hamid said in the report (behind paywall and in Malay only).

«Two days before the announcement of the results of the 14th general election, Jho Low was still here, but fled to the neighboring state after the results were announced.»

Beijing Protection

The report claims that Low and his family members had been moving freely in Hong Kong while the latter is allegedly under Chinese government protection.

«Efforts to bring [Low] home has been ongoing for a long time, however until now, there has not been any convincing responses from the republic,» Abdul Hamid said.

He added that in the joint operation with Malaysia to extradite Low, he felt «as if the Chinese government was being insincere» which has resulted in Low’s continued evasion from official arrest.
