Chinese women dominate the ranks of self-made billionaires, according to a report by Hurun research institute.

Fifty percent of the top 10 of the wealthiest self-made women in the world are Chinese, according to the report. China's touchscreen queen and founder of Lens Technology, Zhou Qunfei, heads the list. With a fortune of $9.8 billion, Zhou also topped the list in 2015.

China is home to the most billionaires with a total of 819, outpacing the U.S. which is home to 571.

Building Wealth

Property development remains the biggest source of wealth for self-made women in China. Chongqing-based Wu Yajun was the second-richest self-made woman in China. Real-estate tycoon Wu is worth $9.3 billion after her wealth surged 83 percent over the past 12 months. Chen Lihua, who topped the self-made female rich list in 2017, dropped to third place as her wealth increased less rapidly to $8.1 billion from $7.2 billion from last year.
