After receiving approval from financial regulators Japanese Bitcoin exchange bitFlyer officially launched in the United States.

The timing could be significant as Bitcoin crashes through the $10k mark. With the approval, bitFlyer says it can operate in 40 states and the District of Columbia, which surpasses the reach of rival Coinbase according to a statement on the bitFlyer website (Japanese). The Tokyo based cryptocurrency exchange opened in San Francisco in August.

With in excess of 30 percent of worldwide Bitcoin exchange volume currently facilitated through bitFlyer, the expansion into the U.S. promises to see a further surge in volumes once American traders connect.

bitFlyer which claims to be the world's largest bitcoin exchange by trading volume says its Japanese exchange has traded more than $100 billion in virtual currency so far this year.
