Tencent Opens China Remittance Service to Foreigners
Tencent's cross-border payments arm TenPay Global is expanding access to China's digital payments ecosystem, allowing foreign nationals to send money directly into China and spend funds through WeChat-linked services.
The company announced on Friday the launch of its new «Remit to China for Non-Chinese Citizens» service, enabling holders of foreign passports to transfer funds from overseas directly to recipients in mainland China.
The move marks another step in Tencent's efforts to make China's highly digitalised payments infrastructure more accessible to international users as the country seeks to attract more tourists, students, expatriates and business travellers.
Direct Access to China's Digital Ecosystem
Under the new service, foreign users can remit funds to recipients in China using mobile phone numbers linked to WeChat accounts. Once funds arrive, recipients can immediately use the balance across a wide range of services embedded within the Weixin ecosystem, including online shopping, mobile top-ups, utility payments and other daily transactions.
The offering is designed to support a variety of use cases, including international workers, students, travellers and expatriates living in China.
According to TenPay Global, the service is available around the clock and allows transfers to be completed within minutes.
Expanding a Global Payments Network
The launch builds on Tencent's broader push to strengthen cross-border payment connectivity between China and overseas markets.
TenPay Global said its remittance platform currently works with more than 60 international banks and money transfer providers, including DBS, Wise, Remitly, LemFi and Panda Remit. The network supports transfers to China from more than 100 countries and territories worldwide.
As cross-border mobility continues to recover across Asia, payment providers are increasingly focusing on reducing friction for international consumers seeking access to local payment networks.
Growing International Acceptance
The remittance service is part of a wider internationalisation strategy for Weixin Pay, Tencent's dominant domestic payments platform.
The company has also expanded its «Pay with Your Home E-Wallet» initiative, which allows overseas visitors to make payments in mainland China using digital wallets issued in their home markets through China's unified cross-border QR-code infrastructure.
TenPay Global said it has partnered with more than 40 overseas wallet providers globally. Currently, 36 e-wallets from 13 countries and regions are connected to Weixin Pay's network, including PayPal in the United States, Singapore-based LiquidPay and ChangiPay, Vietnam's ZaloPay and MoMo, as well as providers in Laos and Mongolia.
The expansion reflects growing efforts by Chinese technology groups to integrate domestic payment platforms with international financial networks, making it easier for foreign users to transact within China's largely cashless economy.
For Tencent, the initiative also reinforces WeChat's position as a gateway to both payments and everyday digital services, extending its reach beyond domestic users to an increasingly international customer base.
