Citi's consumer banking head for Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa will be returning to headquarters in the U.S., finews.asia has learned.

Gonzalo Luchetti was named U.S. consumer banking head, according to an internal note seen by finews.asia. He succeeds Anand Selva who was promoted to CEO of global consumer banking in November last year, succeeding Jane Fraser who was named the chief of the whole American lender two months before.

Gonzalo has been with Citi for nearly 15 years, starting in Latin America to run strategy for the private banking arm before moving to the U.S. to become the global head of wealth management and insurance for the market. Previously, he also worked for J.P. Morgan Chase, Bain & Company and IBM.

Digitalizing Asia

In Asia, Luchetti led the consumer banking business and he has made strides in a variety of areas, most notably in digitalization.

He oversaw the launch of key partnerships in the region with the likes of Grab, PayTM and HKTV mall. In 2020, the bank saw over one million new mobile users – the third consecutive year doing so – with adoption growing 18 percent. In the first three quarters of last year, digital lending penetration reached 53 percent, up from 41 percent, while absolute digital sales grew 41 percent year-on-year.

A successor for his role as consumer banking head of APAC and EMEA has yet to be named.

Strong Leadership

«This move will ensure strategic continuity and strong leadership as we accelerate the transformation of our business model,» said Selva in the note. «[Luchetti] has championed customer advocacy at every level to drive strong improvements in [net promoter score] across digital, cards and retail.»
