Singapore is seeking expansion of its workforce dedicated to artificial intelligence as part of broader plans to develop the city-state’s tech hub status.

Yesterday, Singapore launched its second «National AI (artificial intelligence) Strategy» in an event hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minster Lawrence Wong. The event was attended by 100 local and overseas AI experts from academia, industry and government.

The strategy was first launched in 2019 and according to a statement, it aims to build a trusted and responsible AI ecosystem over the next three to five years. Initiatives to further such efforts include activities led by industry, government and research; leveraging people and communities; as well as infrastructure and environment.

Tripling the Workforce

As part of the efforts, Singapore will aim to develop and grow its pool of related talent. According to Wong, this includes the tripling of the city-state’s AI workforce to around 15,000 through local and overseas workers.

«These are our data, machine learning scientists and engineers. They are the backbone of AI,» Wong said at the event. «Singapore believes in the long-term potential of AI. Our aspiration is to fully leverage AI’s capabilities to improve our lives.»
