Hong Kong’s Private Sector Donates for Fire Tragedy
Dozens of lives have been lost in one of Hong Kong’s worst-ever fire incidents. Multiple corporations across various sectors have responded with donations to support relief efforts.
On November 26, a housing estate in Hong Kong’s northern district of Tai Po suffered what has been called the city's worst fire in decades. The incident started as early as 3 pm yesterday with seven buildings in flames.
Thus far, the death toll has reportedly reached 55 with hundreds still missing.
According to a preliminary investigation, authorities claim that highly flammable styrofoam was used, causing the fire to spread more rapidly, while mesh netting and sheeting outside the building also did not meet safety standards.
Multiple companies and foundations responded by making various forms of donations. They include Sino Group, Chow Tai Fook Group, Xiaomi, Tencent, Xpeng, BYD, Li Ka Shing Foundation, Jack Ma Foundation and more. In the financial sector, DBS Hong Kong and UBS Optimus Foundation also made donations to support relief efforts.
