The Monetary Authority of Singapore’s chairman will step down and look to run as a presidential candidate in the city-state’s upcoming elections.

Senior minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be running for president in Singapore's upcoming election, according to a «CNA» report citing a letter to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

«I wish to inform you that I have decided to put myself forward as a candidate in the forthcoming presidential election. I hence wish to retire from politics and all my positions in Government,» Tharman said in the letter.

Multi-Role Resignation

Tharman said he plans to resign from his role in the People’s Action Party as well as from his posts as senior minister and coordinating minister for social policies on July 7.

He will also step down as chairman of MAS, deputy chair of GIC, chairman of the Economic Development Board’s International Advisory Council and other responsibilities under his ministerial capacity.

«Your departure from the Cabinet and the Party will be a heavy loss to me and my team. We will miss your leadership, insightful views, and wise counsel,» Lee said in response, accepting Tharman’s resignation.
