The appointment, which has a focus on emerging markets and Asia Pacific, bolsters the firm's ESG capabilities.

As part of its long-term push towards sustainable investing, Scottish asset manager Aberdeen Standard Investments has appointed Bill Hartnett as ESG Investment Director, the firm said in a media statement.

Hartnett's role includes a specific remit to support the firm in emerging markets and Asia Pacific. He will be based in London, reporting to Euan Stirling, Global Head of Stewardship and ESG Investment.

Hartnett has over 20 years’ experience of responsible investment and active ownership across roles in asset management, research and asset ownership. He joins Aberdeen from Australian superannuation fund Local Government Super, where he was head of Responsible Investment.

ESG at Aberdeen

Aberdeen's ESG team, a dedicated team of around 20 professionals and more than 30 specialists across asset class teams, has been growing in importance as the firm moves environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations further up the investment agenda.

«As an active investment manager, engagement continues to be at the heart of our approach and it is important for us to influence the standards of governance,» Stirling said.

«We are committed to integrating ESG factors into all of our investment decisions because we believe that will ultimately generate the best long-term, risk-adjusted returns for our clients.»
