Barclays Hires 30-Year Trading Vet From HSBC
A former HSBC executive has joined Barclays’ Hong Kong office to lead high touch sales trading in the region.
Barclays has appointed Joseph Lee as head of high touch sales trading, Asia Pacific, according to a statement. Based in Hong Kong, he will report functionally to global head of cash equities Peter Ramsey and regionally to APAC head of equities distribution Christian Treuer.
In the role, Lee will lead the bank’s high-touch cash trading efforts across the region, focusing on delivering high-quality execution and deepening client engagement. He will work closely with the global cash equities team and Matt Toms, head of APAC cash equity execution, while also partnering with Kaanhari Singh, APAC head of Barclays equities tactical strategies (BETS) and equities derivatives flow sales APAC, as well as with Daniel Ranson-Acton, head of international equity cash sales in APAC.
Lee has around 30 years of experience in equities trading and sales, most recently at HSBC, where he was head of block liquidity in Hong Kong. Prior to that, he worked at Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, CLSA, Goldman Sachs and Nomura/Lehman Brothers.
Recent Expansion
According to Barclays, it has strategically expanded its APAC equities business in recent years, investing in high-growth areas such as structured derivatives, flow derivatives, quantitative investment strategies (QIS) and prime. The bank has also broadened client coverage across key institutional segments and enhanced execution capabilities through platform upgrades and strategic hires.
«Joe’s appointment reinforces our commitment to becoming a Top 5 Global Equities franchise and a leading APAC Cash Equities platform,» commented Ramsey. «Leveraging on our global strengths and capabilities, his industry expertise and client-first mindset will help us deliver the high-touch execution and trusted partnership with our clients in APAC.»
