The wife of former Hong Kong chief executive Leung Chun-ying has been sued by American Express over allegedly unsettled credit card payments.

Leung Tong Ching-yee has yet to settle outstanding credit card payments, according to an «SCMP» report citing a District Court writ last week in a case brought forth by American Express International.

«Despite the plaintiff’s repeated requests and demands for payment including the plaintiff’s solicitors’ demand letter dated May 4, 2022, [Leung] has wrongfully refused, failed or otherwise neglected to pay and settle the said total sum of HK$93,155.41 ($11,870) […] and the late payment charges thereon,» the writ said with an address that matches that of Hong Kong’s ex-chief executive.

American Express is being represented by Hong Kong-based firm Chak and Associates.

Bill Already Paid?

In a report by local media «Ming Pao», Leung is quoted as saying that she did not understand why American Express sued her and would contact the company.

She said that she had received a letter from the U.S. credit card firm before May asking for repayment without a specified amount.

After communicating with the firm several times, she said she made the requested payments in mid-bay before paying back another few thousand dollars last week after receiving another letter.

Ex-Leader

Leung is the wife of Leung Chun-ying, former chief executive of Hong Kong between 2012 and 2017.

He remains politically influential, currently holding the position of vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

He was also reportedly the chief chief convener of the 1,448-member election committee that would subsequently select sole candidate John Lee as Hong Kong’s next leader.
