HSBC Appoints AI Chief in Newly Created Role
London-based HSBC has created a new artificial intelligence role as part of broader efforts to deploy the technology at scale.
HSBC has appointed David Rice as chief AI officer, according to a statement, in a newly created role to provide clear enterprise leadership for adoption of the technology within the bank. Rice was previously the chief operating officer for HSBC’s corporate and institutional banking business.
The appointment is part of broader efforts to make generative AI tools available to all staff to «simplify processes, procedures and policies, and equip customer-facing colleagues with the AI tools they need to deliver more personalized services».
«Our customers increasingly expect their bank to deliver services uniquely aligned to their specific needs, and fast. That’s why we’re building a bank that is designed for the future,» said HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery. «AI plays a key role in how we get there.»
CTO’s Expanded Remit
In addition, chief technology officer Mario Shamtani’s remit has also been expanded to strengthen the bank's technology foundations to deploy AI at scale, which includes modernizing core platforms, building a central AI platform for staff to access a range of models and leading key strategic partnerships.
«Our ambition here is simple – we will empower our colleagues to use AI to create a personalised experience for each customer, deliver it safely, in real time and at scale, while keeping human judgement, decision-making and accountability at the core,» Elhedery added.
