Australia’s central bank has appointed the first female governor in history.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has appointed Michele Bullock as governor for a seven-year term commencing September 18, according to a statement. She will succeed current RBA governor Philip Lowe who will leave the central bank on September 17 following a single seven-year term.

Bullock is currently the deputy governor of RBA and her role will be filled by treasurer Jim Chalmers in due course.

Bullock’s appointment marks the first female ever named as RBA governor. She is a career central banker, having first joined RBA in 1985 before taking on various roles in payments, currency, business services, financial system and more. She was appointed as RBA’s deputy governor on 2 April 2022.
