IMF Names China Central Banker as Deputy MD

The International Monetary Fund has named a new deputy managing director, appointing a former China central banker.

Li Bo has assumed his role as deputy managing director at the IMF, according to its website, after first being nominated by managing director Kristalina Georgieva in June.

«Li brings extensive experience in central banking and law,» she said at the time.

«While at the [People’s Bank of China], he was instrumental in supporting and implementing several important reforms and policies, including state-owned banking reform; anti-money laundering legislation; and establishing a macroprudential policy framework for China.»

PBoC Replacement

Li spent 14 years at the PBoC last as its deputy governor since April 2021. In between, he also held a two-year stint as the vice mayor of the Chongqing municipality.

Li replaces Zhang Tao – also a former PBoC deputy governor – who left in July at the end of his five-year term. Previously, Zhang also worked for the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
