Based in Hong Kong, he will be responsible for growing iShares exchange traded fund (ETF) market share and ETF adoption among investors in the region, as well as institutional index mandates.

BlackRock has appointed Peter Loehnert as Asia-Pacific head of iShares and index investments, effective October 1, 2021, the firm announced in a statement on Thursday.

Loehnert joined BlackRock in 2011 and was most recently based in London, where he headed its international cash management business. He began his career in 2004 and has also held positions at Nomura International, Lehman Brothers International (Europe), Cominvest Asset Management and Commerzbank.

A BlackRock spokesperson clarified to finews.asia that Susan Chan will continue to hold her position as head of iShares and Index Investing and Trading and Liquidity Services, Asia Pacific, and that Loehnert's appointment will allow her to focus more on her head of Asia role.

Important Market

Asia is a critical hub for BlackRock's wealth and institutional clients in the region, who have access to global exposures through its UCITS and 40 Act ETFs, and more recently through its Asia-listed ETFs, Salim Ramji, global head of iShares and index investments, said.

Last year, BlackRock appointed Citi’s former APAC head of ETF and index sales and business development, Rimmo Jolly, as APAC head of iShares, a separate role also based in Hong Kong.

iShares has a global line-up of over 900 ETFs and $3.03 trillion in assets under management as of June 30, 2021.
