New hire from rival aims to support the company's growing user base and lead growth in the region.

San Francisco-based online payment processing company Stripe has hired Rahul Shinghal as Head of APAC - Revenue & Growth, a position based in Singapore, The Business Times reported.

Shinghal joins from PayPal, where he worked for almost a decade, most recently as its Head of Small-Medium Businesses - International Markets. Prior to that, he was the firm's Senior Director & General Manager - South East Asia.

«Very excited to join the mission to increase the GDP of the Internet and help entrepreneurs and enterprises across APAC to harness the full power of the digital economy. The most inspiring part of my work has been to know that it enables opportunities for entrepreneurs & enterprises; whether it's the handicraft manufacturer in Malaysia or the mid sized retailer in Tokyo. The world is getting flatter and it's a privilege to continue to be part of that movement,» Shinghal said in a LinkedIn post.

Singapore Expansion

Valued at $22.5 billion, Stripe is currently the world's most valuable private fintech company. It operates in 26 markets, and has plans to expand to the Middle East and Africa in 2019.

In an interview with «The Business Times» published on Thursday, Stripe's chief business officer Billy Alvarado said the firm is expanding its team in Southeast Asia and will localise its offerings here, including payment acceptance, money movement and point-of-sale terminals.

Stripe's first Asia-Pacific engineering hub opened in Singapore in 2018, where it works with companies such as Grab, Carousell and Chope.
