J. Safra Sarasin continues expanding its Asia unit with the latest hire of an industry veteran from Bank of Montreal, finews.asia has learned.

20-year private banking veteran Monique Chan is joining J. Safra Sarasin as its vice chair of Asia and Hong Kong branch manager.

A spokesperson for the bank confirmed the appointment.

Chan was most recently working at BMO Private Bank where she was its Asia chief executive since 2015. Previously, she had also worked with Edmond de Rothschild Group and HSBC Private Bank in various senior roles.

Chan is the latest senior addition to J. Safra Sarasin as the Basel-headquartered lender continues to expand by recruiting renowned industry leaders.

She will be joining as part of the bank's acquisition of BMO's private banking businesses in Hong Kong and Singapore via an asset purchase agreement.

Recent hires include banking heavyweight Mignonne Cheng who joined from BNP Paribas Wealth Management as its chairman for Asia.
