The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing has reshuffled its senior management team, including with the appointment of a new chief executive officer.

The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) appoints Bonnie Chan as CEO, according to a statement, effective 24 May 2024, for a term of three years until 24 May 2024. She will also become an ex-officio member of the exchange's board. 

Chan has over 30 years of legal and financial experience. She joined HKEX as head of listing in January 2020 and is currently co-chief operating officer. Before that, she was a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell from 2010 to 2019. 

Previously, she also served as a board member of the Hong Kong government’s Inland Revenue, board member of the Financial Services Development Council and an ex-officio member of the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform.

Retirement

Chan succeeds Nicolas Aguzin who will not seek reappointment at the end of his current contract in May 2024.

Reshuffled Team

HKEX has also reshuffled other senior managers including Wilfred Yiu, who has been named deputy chief executive, effective 24 May 2024. Yiu will continue to retain his positions as co-chief operating officer (COO), The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong's chief executive and Hong Kong Futures Exchange's chief executive. 

Yiu has over 25 years of experience in capital markets. He joined HKEX in April 2019 and prior to that, he was deputy CEO and COO of Beijing Gao Hua Securities. He also previously worked at Goldman Sachs and has been a member of the Hong Kong regulator’s Securities Compensation Fund Committee since 2020.

Vanessa Lau has been named co-COO, effective 24 May 2024, while retaining her existing role as group chief financial officer. Lau has 25 years of financial services experience and first joined HKEX in October 2015. Previously she held senior positions at Sanford C. Bernstein (Hong Kong), Alcoa Inc., McKinsey & Company Inc and PricewaterhouseCoopers (UK). She is currently also a non-executive director at Swiss Re.
