The appointment of Alson Ho confirms the strategic importance of the business to the bank.

Alson Ho was promoted to be head of Standard Chartered's wealth management team in Hong Kong, according to an announcement sent by the bank earlier this week. The step is effective immediately.

Ho has a double reporting line to Lay Choo Ong, who leads the Consumer, Private and Business Banking (CPBB) in Hong Kong and Marc Van de Walle, who manages wealth management globally.

According Ong, the appointment is of strategic importance to the business in Hong Kong, with Van de Walle additionally indicating that the city is a significant contributor to the global wealth management business because of its status as a leading financial hub and proximity to mainland China.

Background in Insurance

Before joining Standard Chartered, Ho headed Citibank's insurance business in Hong Kong after joining the bank in 2006 as a management associate. During his stint at the American bank, he led a number of teams in the deposits, equities, trading and margin product areas.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Financial Analysis from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
