Japan has been dethroned as home to the world's most powerful passport, based on visa-free access, by a fellow Asian country, according to immigration consultancy Henley & Partners.

The Singapore passport is the world’s most powerful passport with visa-free entry to 192 destinations, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. The city-state dethroned Japan which fell to third place after holding the top spot for five years.

Henley’s rankings are based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The index is updated on a quarterly basis and covers 199 passports as well as 227 travel destinations.

Singapore has a population of 5.6 million and it granted citizenship to about 23,100 people in 2022.
