Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he has not ruled out the possibility of suing Goldman Sachs over its involvement in the 1MDB scandal.

Earlier this year, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that the country was reassessing the 1MDB settlement deal with Goldman Sachs of $2.5 billion in cash and a guaranteed return of $1.4 billion in assets for dropped charges. Now, Anwar has come out to say that a legal pursuit has not been ruled out.

«I am not discounting the possibility of proceeding again with the lawsuits,» he said in an interview with «CNBC», adding that other options were also being considered, including negotiations.

Asset Recovery

The size of the settlement's sum was one of the issues raised when reassessing the deal. Malaysia and Goldman also disagree over whether or not $500 million in assets and proceeds were received by August 2022 – another condition of the settlement deal which would trigger a one-time interim payment of $250 million, if not met.

If the two are unable to resolve the matter, the dispute would be settled by arbitration, according to a filing by Goldman earlier this year.

Goldman helped 1MDB raise $6.5 billion in two bond offerings, which generated $600 million in fees, according to the US Justice Department. Thereafter, an estimated $4.5 billion was stolen between 2009 and 2014 with Goldman consistently denying any wrongdoing.
