The Malaysian government has released a statement responding to the latest legal filing by Goldman Sachs in London.

In response to a recent London filing by Goldman Sachs to sue Malaysia, the country’s 1MDB task force called the arbitration proceeding «premature and without due consideration of necessary prerequisites», according to a statement.

«In relation to these proceedings, the government of Malaysia will respond to this matter accordingly,» said Johari Abdul Ghani, chairman of the task force.

«Good Faith»

Goldman’s move to make a legal filing in London follows an ongoing review by Malaysia over a settlement deal made with the US lender in 2020. Malaysian authorities highlighted that there were disagreements, including whether or not the condition of recovering $500 million in 1DMB assets by August 2022 was met.

According to Ghani, the deal also stipulates that «good faith discussions» can be held if a disagreement over the settlement occurs.

«The settlement agreement allowed Parties to engage in Amicable Good Faith Discussions for the period of three months if a dispute relating to the settlement agreement arose,» he said.
