A former executive of Morgan Stanley Investment Management has joined asset manager Blackrock in Japan.

Masato Sunaga has been appointed as co-head of Japan client business at Blackrock, effective from July 2023, according to an announcement.

In his new role, Sunaga will be responsible for strengthening strategic relationships with wealth distributors in Japan, which will help Japanese investors prepare for retirement. He will also help accelerate the adoption of exchange traded funds (ETFs) and index products across wealth and institutional clients.

Prior to joining Blackrock, Sunaga most recently served as co-head of sales at Morgan Stanley Investment Management in Japan. He has also served other financial institutions which include Goldman Sachs, Societe Generale, and Daiwa Securities.
