Promoting Innovation in Banking

In September, BIS signed an operational agreement with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to establish an innovation center in the special administrative region.

The Hong Kong Centre is developing a distributed ledger technology based platform to streamline processes for trade finance. It is also examining the opportunities and challenges that big tech poses for financial markets.

BIS also operates similar hubs in Singapore, launched in November 2019, and in Basel. They are helmed by Andrew McCormack, formerly chief information officer at Payments Canada, and Morten Bech, former head of the secretariat of the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI), respectively.
