Berkshire Hathaway's vice chairman and longtime partner of Warren Buffett has passed away at the age of 99.

Charles Munger passed away peacefully at a California hospital on 28 November 2023 at the age of 99, according to a statement.

«Berkshire Hathaway could not have been built to its present status without Charlie’s inspiration, wisdom and participation,» said Warren Buffett.

The statement added that the the family will handle all affairs pursuant to Munger's instructions.

Longtime Friendship

Munger was born in 1924 in Omaha, Nebraska. He dropped out of university at the age of 19 to serve in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. While serving, he studied meteorology at Caltech in California before moving on to complete law school at Harvard in 1948. He would go on to practice real estate law.

Munger grew up half a block away from Buffett’s house, attended the same high school and even worked as a teen at a grocery owned by the legendary investor’s grandfather. But Munger and Buffett would only become friends at the age of 35 and 29, respectively, following a lunch at the Omaha Club.

In addition to a fruitful partnership, Munger also built a reputation for himself at annual shareholder meetings, iconically sipping Coca-Colas and eating See’s Candies peanut brittle. As of 29 November 2023, he had an estimated net worth of $2.6 billion, according to Forbes.
