An influential lawyer who spent the last twelve years with Credit Suisse, has shifted allegiances and joined their biggest rival.

Maria Leistner is the new general counsel (General Counsel) at UBS's Wealth Management division, a spokesman for the bank confirmed to finews.ch.

The Briton worked in various positions at Credit Suisse (CS) including, since last November, the role of managing director and general counsel for international wealth management.

She relocated to Zurich for that role having spent five years as Credit Suisse’s EMEA general counsel in London.

Since joining Credit Suisse in 2004 as a transactional lawyer, Leistner went on to become head of the banking legal team before moving on to head up the EMEA legal team. She also served as co-general counsel for investment banking.

High Profile Move

In 2013 Leistner featured in the «Legal 500 General Counsel Power List», a ranking of the most influential lawyers in the United Kingdom.

At UBS she will take a seat on both the Group Legal Executive Committee and also the Wealth Management Executive Committee, and will replace the current wealth management general counsel Andrew Williams, who has left the company, a spokesman clarified.

Leistner will be based in Zurich and report to both General Counsel Markus Diethelm and on wealth management matters to Jürg Zeltner.
