Mizuho, Japan’s third largest bank, will reportedly give all of its employees in Japan access to generative AI capabilities this week.

Mizuho Financial Group’s 45,000 employees in Japan will be given access to Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service this week, according to a «Bloomberg» report citing Toshitake Ushiwatari, general manager of the bank’s digital planning department.

«This is something we have to do, otherwise, we get left behind,» said Ushiwatari.

Employee Pitches

Employees at all levels are already pitching ideas to use the technology and Ushiwatari’s team is planning to hold an «ideathon» as early as next month to further encourage experimentation.

One idea being floated is to use generative AI as a one-stop reference point for Mizuho’s internal rules, processes and other manuals.

«It’s like poking a beehive,» Ushiwatari said on employee enthusiasm in the firm. «They think it will completely re-set the world, triggering disruptive innovation.»
