Celebrations for a full reopening may have been premature as Shanghai as the government reimposes lockdowns in the city of over 25 million.

Just days after Shanghai sought to celebrate a turnaround and reopening, China’s financial capital may have to wait some more.

The residents from 14 out of Shanghai’s 16 districts have been ordered to undergo mass testing, according to a «Reuters» report, including the central business district of Pudong.

Some districts said residents will not be allowed to leave their housing compounds during the mass testing rounds.

Premature Celebration

Shanghai announced the first steps to a full reopening on June 1 after months of lockdowns and stringent restrictions. Even in areas that are not locked down, residents are currently required to prove they have undergone testing within the last 72 hours to enter malls and offices to access public transport.

The latest reintroduction of restrictions could hit sentiments as onlookers consider whether China will see a V-shaped or prolonged recovery in the second half of this year.

On Thursday, Shanghai recorded 11 new infections including six outside of mass quarantine centers.
