Singaporean authorities announced plans to impose sanctions against Russia, joining what it called «like-minded countries» in condemning Moscow’s decision to invade Ukraine.

Singapore foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan called Russia’s actions unacceptable and announced plans for the city-state to impose sanctions due to the «unprecedented gravity» of the situation.

«Singapore intends to act in concert with many other like-minded countries to impose appropriate sanctions and restrictions against Russia,» Balakrishnan said to the city-state’s parliament.

Sanction Plans

According to Balakrishnan, sanctions will cover both the export and financial markets.

«In particular, we will impose export controls on items that can be used directly as weapons in Ukraine to inflict harm or to subjugate the Ukrainians,» he said, adding the specific measures would be announced shortly.

«We will also block certain Russian banks and financial transactions connected to Russia.»
