With over two decades of wealth management and associated legal expertise the popular banker who has been based in Hong Kong since 1996 left the bank last Friday.

According to reports out of Hong Kong Robert Cormie joined BMO Private Bank in January 2013, when he took his team from CIBC as part of an acquisition, to BMO.

The international wealth arm of Bank of Montreal has been committed to growing the private banking business in Asia. It acquired the CIBC private banking business in Hong Kong and Singapore, (where Cormie had been the MD and APAC head).

The bank also invested in a Chinese trust company COFCO Trust giving it a toehold into the potentially prosperous mainland market and in 2011 they purchased Hong Kong portfolio manager Lloyd George Management.

In March this year the bank hired Petty Lee in Hong Kong as executive director responsible for developing the Hong Kong market.

Cormie is a member of the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners, Hong Kong Trustees Association and the Hong Kong Taxation Institute and combined with his legal and wealth management skills it will not be a surprise to see him in another senior wealth management role in Asia in the near future.
