«Keep the pressure up,» Webb said. «This would hopefully outlive me with continued free public access, perhaps housed in a university faculty or other non-profit organization.»

Investing: Business as Usual

In addition to governance and regulatory issues, Webb also has a decorated career as an equity analyst including a famed annual «Christmas Pick» where he recommended a single undervalued but well-run company per year from 1999 to 2008. During the 10-year period, Webb’s picks returned a cumulative 1,118 percent compared to 87 percent on the Hang Seng Index. Webb would later call the success of his stock picks a distraction to the main goal of improving Hong Kong’s corporate and economic governance standards.

«For those who follow my disclosed long-term investments in HK-listed small-caps, don't worry. I will continue to manage my own portfolio for as long as I am able, and when the time comes I, or if the clock stops prematurely, my estate, will hand it over to professional asset managers,» Webb said in his statement.

«My illness means nothing in terms of my propensity to invest or divest - indeed many of these stocks are cheaper on fundamentals than they have been in a decade.»

«There is No Afterlife or Reincarnation»

Despite the diagnosis, Webb said that he would continue to fight with «full vigor» against cancer, expressing optimism about the speed of medical technology developments and his desire to live on for his wife and two children.

«It's been a blast, but like all good things and life itself, it has to end sooner or later. I firmly believe you only get one shot at life - indeed, the self-aware ‘you' emerges from your brain's neural network and is just a product of biology, chemistry and physics - you are your life,» Webb said.

«There is no afterlife or reincarnation. Having been born with a good brain and the fortuitous circumstances of being adopted as a baby into a loving family in a first-world country, I have seized every opportunity and lived life to its fullest so that I will have no regrets at the end of it, however long or short it may be.»

«Gau Yau»

Webb’s career is richly diverse beyond being just a successful equity investor and advocate for better governance and accountability. After graduating in mathematics in 1986, he authored Pac Man type game Spookyman and created the acclaimed 3D vector graphics game Starion for personal home computer Spectrum before becoming an investment banker in London.

«I won't be launching a health journal or giving rolling updates, so that's all I wish to say on this subject. If you're shocked, then sorry, but so was I,» Webb added.
