Alexander Classen, the former boss of Coutts International, returns to new challenges with a mandate from a large family office.

Years ago, Alexander Classen was the man behind bold plans to energize the wealth management of Coutts, the U.K.-based bank. It didn't work out as planned however and Royal Bank of Scotland eventually put its subsidiary Coutts International up for sale.

Union Bancaire Privee (UBP) bought the Zurich-based unit in March 2015 and a couple of months later, Classen left the company.

Now, the banker with a distinguished career at Pictet, Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan is back as a partner at Bedrock. The family office ranks third in Europe according to a list compiled by «Bloomberg».

And Bedrock is now sending Classen back to where he left off – Zurich, the family office said today. The 53-year-old will open an office in the city and set about building and establishing the business.

Bedrock, which has branches in London, Geneva and Monaco, is offering private-banking, IT and wealth-management services.

Classen was born in Geneva. He is a Swiss citizen, has worked and lived in Switzerland, London and Singapore. He studied at the University of Geneva and acquired a degree in economics.
