The Bank Austria uniquely combines the worlds of art and finance. The most recent example reflecting this is the upcoming exhibition of the Chilean painter Roberto Matta at the Kunstforum in Vienna. finews.art took part in the vernissage.

From 23 February to 2 June 2024, the show «Matta», curated by Ingried Brugger, takes place at the Kunstforum Vienna and presents a retrospective of Chilean painter Roberto Matta, whose last comprehensive appreciation in Austria was over three decades ago.

The artist, who preferred to be known simply as «Matta», left an unmistakable mark in art history.

Central Role in 20th-Century Art

His contributions to Surrealism and his connections to Abstract Expressionism in New York, where he interacted with the likes of Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, and Arshile Gorky, testify to his central role in 20th-century art.

Matta's works, shaped by his ability to explore new «spatial districts», reflect the deep engagement with the surrealist formal language and the search for alternative realities.

Window To The Inner World

The exhibition provides an insight into Matta's «Inscapes» — his inner worlds that lead the visitor into another dimension. These personal universes, captured by the artist on canvas, offer a perspective on the unconscious and the dream worlds of Surrealism.

The presentation of these works in Vienna allows the audience to relive Matta's visionary spaces and his interpretation of a world that has come apart at the seams.

Symbiotic Relationship

By organizing this exhibition, Bank Austria is demonstrating its role as a patron of the arts and emphasizing the importance of art for society. By combining art and finance, the bank creates a platform for cultural exchange and reflection.

Roberto Matta's exhibition underlines Bank Austria's commitment to art that stimulates the individual imagination whilst addressing socially relevant issues.

Sustainable Dialogue

With Matta's return to Vienna, the Bank Austria Kunstforum opens a window to a dialogue between past and present, between art and viewer.

The exhibition not only offers a rare opportunity to explore Matta's extensive oeuvre but also highlights the importance of art that is not afraid to send a political message and challenge society.

Long-term Commitment

With this initiative, Bank Austria is reaffirming its long-term commitment to the art world and demonstrating that financial institutions can play an essential role in promoting and preserving cultural values.
